SWEA Toronto's annual Swedish Christmas Fair started in 1982. For 37 years we held the Christmas Fair at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre. In 2019 we moved to a new venue at Daniels Spectrum in Toronto.
Each year the Swedish Christmas Fair attracts thousands of people who come to enjoy the Swedish food at the Café, the Lucia procession, the Swedish Folk Dancers and Choir, the Childrens Loft with Crafts, the Book Corner, the yearly exhibit and of course the large selection of Swedish designed products. The large selection of Swedish food in the 'Mathörnan' or 'Taste of Sweden' as we also call it, provides the Scandinavian population and the adventurous Canadians with all the necessary items for their Christmas Smörgåsbord.
The Swedish Christmas Fair is our largest fundraiser of the year. The money raised goes towards the yearly donations and scholarship program that SWEA Toronto does each year. We support the Swedish Church, the Swedish School, the Swedish Folkdancers and Singers and also other Swedish related cultural in the GTA. Each year we award scholarships to Ontario students who have been accepted to study in a Swedish university. In 2019 we awarded $20,000 to ten students out of 69 applicants.
This year, 2020, we unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to make a virtual version of our beloved Swedish Christmas Fair. Due to the ongoing pandemic we could not be sure that the government would allow us to organize the Swedish Christmas Fair in it's usual form. However, we could not imagine not providing all of our faithful guests with their favourite Swedish foods and products in time for Christmas. We decided to organize a webshop, sell through the summer and then ship all the food, candy and other products from Sweden in the fall, arriving in Canada in time for Christmas.
We thank you for your continued support of the Swedish Christmas Fair and hope to see you in person again in November 2021.
Have a wonderful Christmas. God Jul.
